Banshea stood on the rooftop, a silhouette against the full moon. She wrapped a black cloak around herself, not so much for warmth, though the night was chilly, but more because her mood dictated the slight costume change. There was so much she still didnt understand. She had left her clans home because it was haunted with memories, some happy, but all painful in that that phase of her life had ended so suddenly. She hadnt even seen the change coming. But maybe she had and wouldnt believe it could happen. One question stood out in her mind.
She felt a hand rest on her shoulder.
"Penny for your thoughts," Brooklyn said. Banshea sighed and looked out at the setting moon in the west.
"What happened to my clan, exactly?" she said. "How did they all just disappear? Are they still alive, living with another clan, forgetting their children they left behind in California? If I go back, will they be there, waiting for me?"
"You dont need to go back," Brooklyn said. "Everything you need is here, with us, with me."
"Everything but answers."
"You cant find them here? I mean, use some magic to find out what happened?"
"Ive tried," she nearly moaned. "Believe me, Ive tried. But I cant find anything. Its too broad a search. I dont know enough." She turned and looked at Brooklyn. "I have to go. You understand that, dont you?"
"Let me go, too."
"No. This is my quest, not yours."
"Yeah," Brooklyn said with a kind of a sigh. "Id probably just get in the way. Anyway, Im no sorcerer." Banshea gently turned his face so she was looking into his eyes.
"Sorcery has nothing to do with it. This would be a quest of the heart, and yours isnt in it. Mine is. Its something I have to do, alone. Dont worry about me. Ill be careful." He held her close, wrapping his arms and wings around her.
"I just dont want to lose you," he said quietly. Banshea hugged him.
"I dont want to lose you either. But I have to go. I cant find peace until I find the truth." Brooklyn nodded. He knew there was nothing he could do to stop her. He understood that this was something that she needed to do. There was no force strong enough to hold her back, not with her stubbornness. He knew that she would find her clan or perish in the attempt. He just hoped that it didnt have to come to that.
